🏞️ Mesogeio Village – Samos

A mountain village rich in history, tradition, and authentic rural identity

📍 Location & Geography

Mesogeio is a mountainous village located in the central part of Samos, on the southwestern foothills of Mount Ambelos (also known as Karvounis), at an altitude of approximately 570 meters. It lies 19 km from Pythagoreio, 22 km from Karlovasi, and 32 km from the town of Samos. It is the third highest village on the island, and one of the few without a sea view.

🏛️ Administrative Information

Mesogeio belongs to the Municipal Unit of Pythagoreio, within the Municipality of Eastern Samos. According to the 2021 census, it has a population of 112 residents, covers an area of 0.02 km², and has a population density of 8 inhabitants per km².

🕰️ Historical Background

The village’s history is closely linked to nearby Pandroso. According to historian Epaminondas Stamatiadis, the first settlers of the two villages were Albanian warriors (Arvanites) who fought against the Turks under Skanderbeg. After his death in 1468, they fled Ottoman persecution and settled in remote areas.
Other sources, such as Nikolaos Zafeiriou, mention that the first inhabitants were Greeks from southern Epirus.

🌿 The Village Today

Mesogeio maintains its traditional Samos architecture, with stone houses and cobbled alleys. The main church of the village is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (Life-Giving Spring) and was founded on May 16, 1839. The village is known for its peaceful atmosphere and authentic rural character.
