📍 Location & Access

Ampelos is a traditional mountain village in the north-central part of Samos, built at an altitude of approximately 290 meters, on the green slopes of Mount Ampelos (also known as Karvounis). Until 1957, it was known by its older name: Nenedes.

It is accessed by a 4-kilometer provincial road that connects it to the main Vathy–Karlovasi highway, near Agios Konstantinos.

Distances:

  • 🚗 24 km from Samos Town

  • 🚗 12 km from Karlovasi

  • 🚗 4 km from Agios Konstantinos

  • 🚶‍♂️ Around 30 minutes on foot from the Ampelos waterfalls

👥 Population & Historical Evolution

As of the 2011 census, Ampelos had 252 permanent residents. However, the demographic story of the village is notable:

  • 1828: 320 residents

  • 1864: 533 residents

  • 1897: 721 residents

  • 1940: 756 residents

  • 1971: 404 residents

  • 2011: 252 residents

The sharp population decline during the 1960s was mainly due to emigration, but local life and community spirit endure.

🕰️ Historical Notes & Name Origins

The oldest recorded reference to the name Nenedes comes from a 1774 property donation, describing a house near "Saint John" (Agios Ioannis).

In 1851, under the Principality of Samos, Nenedes was part of the Municipality of the Six Neighborhoods together with:

  • Agios Konstantinos

  • Manolates

  • Stavrinides

  • Valeontades

  • Margarites

In 1900, it became an independent municipality, and in 1957, it was officially renamed Ampelos, reflecting the village’s long-standing connection with vine cultivation.

🏘️ Traditional Architecture & Layout

Ampelos retains its traditional character with:

  • Stone-built houses with tiled roofs

  • Wooden balconies and flowery courtyards

  • Narrow cobbled alleys that invite quiet strolls

The central village square is the heart of daily life, where locals gather at taverns and cafés shaded by old plane trees.

⛪ Church & Religious Life

The village church is dedicated to the Conception of Saint John the Baptist and celebrates on September 23.
The current building was constructed in 1966, replacing earlier churches on the same site – the oldest dating back to 1672.

🍇 Local Economy & Products

Ampelos lives up to its name (ampelos means “vine” in Greek). Its economy is rooted in agriculture, with a focus on:

  • Viticulture: The village produces exceptional Muscat wine, contributing to the island’s world-renowned sweet wines

  • Olive oil: Produced using traditional methods, with rich flavor and aroma

  • Honey: Ampelos honey is known for its purity and quality, thanks to the surrounding flora

🌿 Nature & Viewpoints

Ampelos is surrounded by dense vegetation, including vineyards, olive groves, and pine forests.
From its higher points, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the North Aegean Sea and, on clear days, even the coast of Asia Minor.

🚶‍♂️ Activities & Natural Excursions
  • 🏞️ Ampelos Waterfalls: About 1.5 km away – a 30-minute shaded hike to a hidden natural wonder

  • 🥾 Hiking: Trails around the village lead into the mountain and through lush valleys

  • 📸 Ideal for photography, nature observation, and peaceful escapes

🎭 Culture & Local Festivities

Ampelos keeps its traditions alive with vibrant local celebrations:

  • Tiganita Festival (July 21): A traditional gathering with music, dancing, and the famous local pancakes

  • Religious Feast (September 23): For the Conception of Saint John, with liturgy and festive atmosphere

  • Cultural evenings with traditional music, wine, and authentic hospitality

🎯 Ampelos is not just a village – it’s a place of history, flavor, nature, and tradition. A quiet corner of Samos where authentic island life still thrives.
