🏡 Mavratzaioi of Samos – The Village of Pottery and Heritage
🗺️ Location & Geographic Details

Mavratzaioi is a traditional village on the southeastern side of Samos, built on a quiet hillside at an altitude of about 259 meters. Surrounded by cultivated lands and gentle slopes, it offers a peaceful inland setting.
Administratively, it belongs to the Municipal Unit of Pythagoreio, within the Municipality of Eastern Samos. According to the 2021 census, the village has 231 permanent residents.

🏛️ Historical Origin & Name

The village was founded in the late 18th century and was originally named "Gaitanides", after a local shepherd named Gaitanos.
Later, the family of Georgios Mavratzas settled in the area, and the village took its current name “Mavratzaioi” in their honor.

🏺 Pottery Industry – The Craft of Clay

From the late 19th century, Mavratzaioi developed a thriving pottery industry.
In the nearby area of Kokkinopouria, there were rich deposits of red clay, perfect for ceramics.
For over fifty years, local artisans produced everyday pottery items such as:
🫗 water jugs,
🍲 bowls, pots, and storage jars,
🪴 and later decorative vases.

This craft served the entire island’s needs until the 1950s. With the rise of plastic containers, pottery production sharply declined and most workshops closed.
Today, traditional pottery survives on a small scale, mostly for decorative and souvenir items.

⛪ Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross – Religious Heritage

Just outside the village lies the impressive Holy Monastery of the Timios Stavros (Holy Cross), founded in 1592 by the monk Neilos the Latrinos.
This is one of the most important religious sites on Samos, located at an altitude of about 200 meters, with notable architecture and sacred icons.

🔔 The monastery celebrates on September 14, for the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, attracting pilgrims from across the island.
Its church is a three-aisled basilica, and the monastery remains a living place of worship to this day.
